Clearing the Clouds: Navigating Smoking Cessation in Older Adults

This presentation will help the audience navigate the numerous available tobacco cessation guidelines and position statements so they can implement routine tobacco cessation services at their clinical sites. Special focus will be on older adults with tobacco dependence. We will begin with a review of first-line pharmacotherapy options for treating older adults with tobacco dependence. Current guidelines and position statements will be discussed. Then we will review the use of monotherapy versus combination pharmacotherapy for the treatment of older adults with tobacco dependence. Next, the audience will design an individualized smoking cessation treatment plan for an older adult through interactive case studies. During the case studies, we will examine obstacles encountered by older adults associated with tobacco cessation and recommend solutions. Finally, we will end with a discussion on areas in which a clinical pharmacist can impact the care of older adults with tobacco.
