Hospital Pharmacist and Chief Pharmacy Informatics Officer

Pieter Helmons graduated from Utrecht University School of Pharmacy and completed his residency at Catharina Hospital Eindhoven in The Netherlands. Pieter moved to California in 2007 and investigated the effects of bar-coding technology on medication safety at UCSD Health System in San Diego. Pieter was appointed Pharmacist Specialist Pharmacoeconomics and specialized in benchmarking UCSDs drug use patterns with other similar hospitals. He completed a Masters Program in clinical research. Pieter returned to the Netherlands in 2011 and obtained his PhD at the University of Groningen. The title of his thesis is: "Medication safety through information technology: a focus on medication prescribing and administering".
He is the chair of the P&T committee and a member of the IT Steering Committee of the hospital. Pieter is the Chief Pharmacy Informatics Officer of the hospital (CPIO) and leads the Pharmacy Informatics team. He is an active member of the Drug Management Committee and the Strategy Development Taskforce of the Dutch Society of Hospital Pharmacists. He is also a member of the European Society of Hospital Pharmacists and a member of the Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology of ASHP.
