Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship

Dr. Brian Frescas is a board-certified infectious diseases pharmacist serving as director of antimicrobial stewardship for the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, optimizing antimicrobial use for its five hospitals in the Texas Coastal Bend, as well as Residency Program Coordinator for CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline's PGY1 residency program. He earned his PharmD from UT Austin's College of Pharmacy and pursued PGY1 residency training at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. He went on to complete an infectious diseases PGY2 program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where his major research project involved outcomes associated with cefepime versus meropenem for ceftriaxone-resistant Enterobacterales bacteremia, ultimately publishing these results in 2023. In his current role, Brian champions evidence-based prescribing via system-wide policy creation and education campaigns throughout CHRISTUS Spohn's hospitals. Brian also precepts several infectious diseases rotations for Shoreline's PGY1 program, Driscoll Children's PGY1 program, and Texas A&M School of Pharmacy for APPE students. As a research mentor, Brian has co-authored several research manuscripts spearheaded by his residents and conducts statistical analyses for all research projects in his program. A member of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, Brian sits on two of its committees. His practice interests include gram-negative resistance mechanisms, efficacy of oral versus intravenous antibiotics, and transitions of care antimicrobial optimization. Outside work, Brian enjoys performing music, reading fantasy, and indulging in the occasional videogame.
