Opioid Stewardship and Palliative Medicine Pharmacist

Dr. Maureen Saphire is a Palliative Medicine Clinical Specialist and Opioid Stewardship Pharmacist at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She created the opioid stewardship program at The James where she collaborates with clinicians in oncology, hematology, palliative medicine, and medication safety to promote safe and effective use of opioids for patients with cancer and sickle cell disease. In her clinical role, she assists the outpatient palliative medicine team with pain and symptom management across the cancer trajectory and exercises medication prescribing and monitoring privileges under a practice agreement. Dr. Saphire obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University and completed a PGY1 Residency at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and HospiScript Services, LLC. She formerly served as Program Director for the PGY2 Pain Management & Palliative Care Residency Program at Ohio State and continues serving as a guest surveyor for ASHP Residency Accreditation site visits. Dr. Saphire is active in the Society of Pain & Palliative Care Pharmacists, serving on the Opioid Stewardship Committee and as Chair of the Continuing Education Subcommittee. She enjoys precepting and mentoring pharmacy residents and students, and periodic teaching assignments as guest faculty at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy.
