Abigail Elmes-Patel, PharmD, MHPE, BCPS, is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago Retzky College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice, a member of the Institute for Research on Addictions at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), and Family Medicine Clinical Pharmacist at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System with a practice site in street medicine. She has also served as Fellowship Program Director for the UIC Academic/Family Medicine Fellowship since 2022. Dr. Elmes received her PharmD (2019) from the University of Pittsburgh and completed three years of post-doctoral training (Pharmacy Practice Residency (ambulatory care-focused), 2020 – Northeastern University; Academic/Family Medicine Fellowship, 2022 – UIC).
As Principal Investigator on an Illinois state grant, she leads a fleet of medical mobile units dedicated to delivering life-saving opioid use disorder services. Her hands-on experience includes responding to community overdoses with naloxone and coordinating care transitions with first responders. Her ultimate goal is to drive an outcomes-focused, collaborative research program that centers on and evaluates the clinical implementation of mobile unit/street medicine services that feature innovative techniques to reach people who use drugs where they live and congregate and that incorporate clinical pharmacists as an integral component of the interprofessional healthcare and educational team.
