Assistant Deputy Chief Consultant, Clinical Pharmacy Practice and Policy
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Dr. Julie Groppi began her career as a VA pharmacist in 1997 and she has held agency leadership positions in the state and nationally. In 2011, she transitioned her career to the VA Central Office in Washington, DC, as the national pharmacist program manager for clinical pharmacy practice, policy, and standards. She was promoted to assistant deputy chief consultant for clinical pharmacy practice and policy in 2020. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Groppi has been a principal architect of VA initiatives that drive the widespread deployment of clinical pharmacist practitioners (CPPs). Her leadership supported the development of a credentialing and privileging system that allows qualified CPPs to provide direct patient care to veterans with a wide range of clinical and behavioral health needs. This work is regarded as a model for optimizing advanced pharmacy practices in the public and private sectors. Dr. Groppi was an elected member of the ASHP Board of Directors (2018–2021) and has served on many ASHP councils, workgroups, and advisory bodies. Dr. Groppi and her VA colleagues received the ASHP Award of Excellence (2020) and she received the ASHP Pharmacy Champion Award in 2023. Her major honors include the ASHP Fellow (2016), Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists Distinguished Service Award (2019), the Under Secretary for Health PBM Innovation Award (2015), and the South Florida Federal Employee of the Year (2010).
