Assistant Director, Ambulatory Specialty Programs

Alex Mersch, Pharm.D., MBA, BCPS, serves as the Assistant Director for Ambulatory Specialty Programs at University of Iowa Health Care. A graduate of Roosevelt University, he completed his PGY-1 residency training at the University of Iowa Health Care and earned his MBA from Upper Iowa University. Alex began his career providing patient care as a clinical pharmacy specialist in specialty pharmacy areas and later as a coordinator, helped to develop specialty pharmacy services for patients with severe asthma. Shortly thereafter, Alex assumed the role of specialty operations manager where he helped to rapidly scale and grow specialty pharmacy operations.
Alex now provides leadership in coordination with his management team for operational and clinical services at UI Health Care including the UI Specialty Pharmacy Services, Clinical Specialist programs, Investigational Drug Services, Ambulatory Surgery Center Pharmacy, and Clinical Cancer Center Pharmacy. In his role, Alex focuses on enterprise growth, clinical services expansion, operational excellence, manufacturer & payor partnerships, and providing support for high cost and gene therapies. His other responsibilities include implementation and maintenance of REMS programs, meeting accreditation and regulatory requirements, and contracting. Alex has a passion for talent development and serves as the PGY-1 Residency Coordinator for Ambulatory Care at UI Health Care. He has served in roles at the state and national level to advance policies supporting patient care and access.
